Appliance glossary
Plain-language definitions for the specs and terms that actually change a buying decision — from counter-depth and dBA to CEE tier, anti-tip brackets, and make-up air. Every ApplianceIQ spec table links back to these definitions.
Dimensions & fit
- Counter-depth
- A refrigerator built shallower (usually ~24–30 in deep) so its body sits nearly flush with standard countertops for a built-in look, trading some interior capacity for a cleaner profile.
- Standard-depth
- A refrigerator with a deeper body (~30–36 in) that holds more but projects several inches past the counter.
- Cubic feet (cu. ft.)
- The volume measure for refrigerator, freezer, oven, and microwave interiors. Larger numbers mean more usable space.
- Cutout dimensions
- The exact width, height, and depth of the cabinet opening an appliance must fit into — always measured before buying built-in or slide-in models.
- Capacity
- How much an appliance holds: cubic feet for fridges/ovens, cubic feet or kg for laundry, and place settings for dishwashers.
- Place settings
- The standard dishwasher capacity unit — one place setting is the dishes, glass, and cutlery for one person. Full-size models typically hold 12–16.
- Handle clearance
- Extra depth a door or drawer handle adds beyond the appliance body, which can affect whether doors open fully in tight kitchens.
- Flush install
- Fitting an appliance so its face aligns evenly with surrounding cabinetry, common for counter-depth fridges and slide-in ranges.
- Stackable
- A washer and dryer pair designed to be installed one atop the other with a stacking kit to save floor space.
- Reversible door
- A door whose hinges can be swapped to the opposite side so the appliance suits either a left- or right-handed layout.
Performance & efficiency
- dBA (decibels A-weighted)
- A loudness measure for dishwashers and range hoods. Lower is quieter: 44 dBA or below is very quiet, 45–49 is moderate, 50+ is noticeable in an open kitchen.
- ENERGY STAR
- A certification for appliances that meet government efficiency standards, using less electricity or water than conventional models.
- CEE tier
- An efficiency rating from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency; higher tiers (I, II, III) indicate greater efficiency and often qualify for larger utility rebates.
- CFM (cubic feet per minute)
- The airflow a range hood or ventilation fan moves. Higher CFM clears smoke and steam faster; powerful hoods may require make-up air.
- BTU (British Thermal Unit)
- A heat-output measure for gas burners and cooktops. Higher BTU burners boil and sear faster; lower BTU burners simmer more gently.
- Induction
- A cooktop that heats magnetic cookware directly with an electromagnetic field, offering fast, precise, efficient heat with a cool surface around the pan.
- Convection
- An oven mode that circulates hot air with a fan for faster, more even baking and roasting than static heat.
- Moisture sensor
- A dryer feature that detects when laundry is dry and stops the cycle, saving energy and reducing over-drying.
- Spin speed (RPM)
- How fast a washer spins to extract water. Higher RPM leaves clothes drier, shortening dryer time.
- Third rack
- A shallow top dishwasher rack for utensils, lids, and small items that frees space in the lower racks.
- Heated dry
- A dishwasher drying method using a heating element. Condensation and fan-assisted drying are quieter, cooler alternatives.
- Tub material
- A dishwasher's interior material. Stainless steel tubs resist stains, retain heat for better drying, and are quieter than plastic tubs.
Features & controls
- Sabbath mode
- A setting that disables lights, tones, and displays and holds a steady temperature so an appliance can be used during religious observances that restrict operating controls.
- Self-cleaning
- An oven cycle that burns off residue at high heat (or with steam) so it can be wiped away, avoiding chemical cleaners.
- Air fry
- An oven or range mode using high-speed convection to crisp food with little or no oil, similar to a countertop air fryer.
- Smart connectivity
- Wi-Fi or app control that enables remote start, status alerts, cycle downloads, and diagnostics.
- Through-the-door dispenser
- A refrigerator door dispenser for chilled water and ice without opening the door; requires a connected water line.
- Dual fuel
- A range that pairs a gas cooktop with an electric (often convection) oven, combining flame control with even baking.
- Slide-in range
- A range designed to sit between cabinets with its controls on the front and no back panel, for a built-in look; a freestanding range has rear controls and finished sides.
- Flex zone / convertible drawer
- A refrigerator or laundry compartment whose temperature or function can be changed (e.g., fridge to freezer, or a specialty wash zone).
- Steam cycle
- A laundry or dishwasher option that adds steam to loosen soils, reduce wrinkles, or sanitize.
- Auto-open dry
- A dishwasher feature that pops the door open at the end of the cycle to release steam and improve air drying.
Safety & installation
- Anti-tip bracket
- A safety bracket that anchors a range or tall appliance to the floor or wall so it cannot tip forward under weight; required by code in many areas.
- ADA height / ADA compliant
- Appliances meeting Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines for reach and controls — for example, front-mounted controls and accessible operation.
- Water line
- The plumbing connection an ice maker, water dispenser, or steam oven needs; a kit is often required if the location lacks one.
- Gas type (natural gas vs propane)
- Gas appliances are configured for natural gas or liquid propane; a conversion kit and proper setup are needed to switch.
- Junction box / hardwired
- An electrical connection where an appliance is wired directly rather than plugged in — common for cooktops, wall ovens, and some dishwashers.
- Venting (ducted vs recirculating)
- A range hood either ducts air outside (ducted) or filters and returns it to the room (recirculating). Ducted removes heat and moisture more effectively.
- Make-up air
- Replacement air a home needs when a high-CFM hood exhausts large volumes; some jurisdictions require a make-up air system above a CFM threshold.
- Power cord (sold separately)
- Many ranges and dryers ship without a cord because plug type varies (e.g., 3-prong vs 4-prong); the correct cord must be added.
- Trim kit
- A frame that lets a countertop or over-the-range microwave be built into cabinetry for a finished look.
- Leveling legs
- Adjustable feet that keep an appliance level for proper door seal, drainage, and vibration control.
- Delivery path
- The route an appliance travels into the home — doorways, stairs, and turns — measured to confirm the unit fits through.
- Haul-away
- A retailer service that removes and disposes of your old appliance at delivery, sometimes for a fee.
Buying & pricing
- Observed price
- A price ApplianceIQ recorded from a public retail listing, shown with when it was last checked. It is not a quote and may change at checkout.
- Verified price
- An observed price that has passed ApplianceIQ's identity, freshness, and outlier checks and is fresh within 72 hours.
- Price spread
- The gap between the lowest and highest verified price for the same model across tracked retailers — how much you can save by shopping around.
- Deal-truth score
- ApplianceIQ's 0–10 rating of how much of an advertised discount the tracked market actually supports; higher means a genuinely below-market deal.
- Open-box
- A returned or display unit sold at a discount; condition varies, so confirm warranty and completeness before buying.
- Price match
- A store policy that matches a competitor's lower price on an identical model, subject to the store's terms and proof requirements.
- Rebate
- A partial refund from a manufacturer, retailer, or utility, often tied to efficiency (e.g., ENERGY STAR or CEE tier) and eligibility rules.
- Model number (MPN)
- The manufacturer's part number that uniquely identifies a specific model and configuration — the most reliable way to compare the exact same appliance across stores.
