Why deliveries fail
The most common delivery failures are almost never the product — they are the site. The unit is fine; the house was not ready. Every item below is a real, recurring failure mode.
The week-before checklist
Path and clearance. Measure every doorway, hallway pinch point, stair turn, and railing on the route in. Standard interior doors are 30–32 inches; many fridges are 36. Old unit disconnected. Haul-away crews remove appliances — most are not licensed to disconnect gas, and many will not disconnect hardwired units. Gas dryers and ranges need the line shut and capped before the truck arrives.
The hookups exist and are correct. Electric dryers in Canada need a 240V outlet that matches the cord type; gas appliances need a shutoff valve within reach; dishwashers need a supply line and drain path; fridges with ice makers need a water line — which very few homes have exactly where the new fridge goes.

- Will the old appliance be disconnected and hauled away — and by whom, given most crews will not touch gas or hardwired units?
- Are hoses, cords, trim kits, anti-tip brackets, water lines, or vent kits included?
- What happens if the appliance does not fit on delivery day?
What to confirm with the retailer
Delivery fee vs. installation fee (they are different services), haul-away terms, what "installation" actually includes for your category, and the damage-inspection window — inspect before signing, because signed-clean claims are hard to reverse.

If it goes wrong at the door
Know three things before the truck is booked. Haul-away fees: removal of the old unit is often a per-unit charge, priced higher for gas (capping is a licensed job) and sometimes excluded entirely for open-box or clearance deliveries — confirm the fee and what it includes when you book, not on the doorstep. Refusals: if the unit cannot make the turn, the crew will not force it; a refused delivery usually means redelivery or restocking fees that land on YOU if the failure was an unmeasured house, and on the retailer if their crew misjudged a documented fit. Liability: damage in transit is the retailer's until you sign; damage during installation belongs to whoever performed the install. Note every mark on the paperwork BEFORE signing — a signed-clean delivery converts their problem into yours.
